It is not easy to talk about the Fourth World to 14-year-old teenagers from a small town like Navarcles. Although marginalisation is ubiquitous in our society, homelessness is hard to see in el Bages.
High school textbooks do not dedicate many lines to the problem of homelessness, and yet the accounts of people falling into homelessness invite us to make profound and enriching reflections on our own way of life. First of all, we need to teach respect for all, especially for the most vulnerable in society, who live in unequal conditions. Secondly, we need to teach responsibility, because most people living on the streets are often the victims of unfair situations and from the profit that others may have made. Thirdly, we need to teach solidarity, from the experience of those who are involved with organisations such as Arrels Fundació. It is not an easy educational task because it is easy to degenerate into sensationalism, self-indulgence and moral condemnation. The visit to the headquarters of the foundation helped the students understand better the task of solidarity that is being undertaken.
