“Teatre al Ras” (Theater out in the open) is the Arrels’ theater group, founded in 2015 with the intention of creating a space for artistic expression, where everyone can have the opportunity to give their best. Currently, the group is formed by a dozen of people, directed by Laia Vila, and has premiered three different plays: L’últim crit (The last cry, 2015), Verdad, Beso y Acción (Truth, Kiss and Action, 2019), and now, Càsting (Casting, 2024). Our methodology is inspired by the “Tú Si Ke vales” model of Arrels, which promotes equal participation and the absolute commitment of each member.
At “Teatre al Ras”, we believe in an activity that equalizes everyone, where all people are asked to give their 100% to achieve a common goal. The group is made up of individuals who live or have lived on the streets, and whom we support through Arrels Fundació, as well as workers and volunteers from the organization, along with members of the local community. We base ourselves on an atmosphere of trust and respect, where care is part of the creative process and extends to all facets of the project.
We go through life as if we were in a constant cycle of auditions and castings, always evaluated. Let me introduce myself: my name is Maria, Jaume, Carmen, Alfredo… I was born on a sunny day, or maybe there was a cloud or two, might be. Who knows if it is because of the decisions I’ve made, the grandparents I had, that day I woke up late or the day I arrived at school too early. Either way, maybe today it will be me. Today I’m here to find out if I’m suitable, if I’m the chosen one!

Are you a teacher or a student and want the play “Càsting” to come to your centre?
Approximate duration: 2 hours
Materials needed: 2 black chairs, 10 standing microphones, and 10 chairs for the discussion. If you do not have these, we will evaluate on a case-by-case basis. If it’s possible, it would be great to have a space to hang an acrobatic dance fabric.

“L’últim crit” was directed by actress Ivana Miño and performed by individuals who have lived on the streets, volunteers, workers and professional actors, including Carlota Olcina. It originated from a volunteer initiative and a theater workshop, becoming a performance that combined film and theater formats.
It’s an example of how theater can become a tool that allows breaking certain roles and creating new bonds from a position of equality among the participants, eliminating labels and prejudices.
This play offers a unique and immersive experience, intending to break traditional stage barriers and establishing a direct connection with the audience. It features a fragmented proposal where the actors approach the audience to offer interactive dynamics and games that encourage participation.
Through choreographies and movements, the characters share their personal experiences and their world vision, creating an intimate and close atmosphere. It’s always performed on the ground, without stages or platforms, removing any physical barrier between the actors and the audience.
Thanks to our constant work, the conducted activities, and the collaboration with other entities, Teatre al Ras achieved a significant media impact. The project opened professional doors: some individuals that participated began working at renowned institutions such as Teatre Lliure.
The inclusive theater showcase NOSaltres was an initiative by Teatre Lliure, that put theater at the service of social realities that are often marginalized or silenced.
